Rape and Wars

Cold War:

  • According to Avoiding Armageddon a similar case of rape occurred during the Cold War and only exposure was able to spark the beginning of the US and Britain taking action :  “The Red Army then marched into Berlin, “liberating” the German people from Nazi rule, all the while sanctioning the murder and rape of millions of innocent civilians”(2).

    • “Stalin even sanctioned this behavior, believing that people should  “understand it if a soldier who has crossed thousands of kilometres through blood and fire and death has fun with a woman or takes some trifle” ”(2).

    • Exposure part: “As word of Soviet atrocities spread through the Allied High Command… Churchill even considered enlisting captured German soldiers and invading Russia once the Nazis had surrendered”(2).

  • During the Cold War, the Civil Rights Movement took place in America. In the Civil Rights Movement, two big leaders, Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois, were devoted and strived to educate blacks in order to gain full African American equality. Even though they had contradicting ideas, where Booker T. Washington founded Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute, which aimed to equip AA’s with teaching diplomas and useful skills in agricultural, domestic or mechanical work and he believed that AA’s should fit into the whites’ society and W.E.B. DuBois started “The Crises”-an editorial and one of the founders of NAACP, and founded the Niagara Movement, which insisted that blacks seek a liberal arts education so that AA community would have well-educated leaders, he wanted Blacks to keep their society and tradition and not lose it.

    • Most important was that they both believed education was the true way to equality.

  • During the Cold War, the Soviets were aiming to spread Communism throughout the world as part of the worldwide struggle between workers and the wealthy. Therefore the Americans despised Communism and hated communists. Then Senator Joseph McCarthy took advantage of the nation’s wave of fanatic terror against communism, and emerged on February 9, 1950, claiming he had a list of 205 people in the State Department who were known members of the American Communist Party but were not really communists.

    • This led to the sprouting of the McCarthy era and McCarthyism which is the practice of making accusations of disloyalty, subversion, or treason without proper regard for evidence. Which was followed by numerous false accusations. The American public went crazy with the thought of seditious communists living within the United States, and roared for the investigation of the underground agitators.

    • McCarthyism is an example of how exposing and educating people, in terms of persuasion, will cause a spark of belief in the people and therefore promote change.

Examples of What Needs to Be Done/Has Been Done

  • SlutWalk

    • Started in Toronto, Ontario

    • On January 24th, 2011, a representative of the Toronto Police gave shocking insight into the Force’s view of sexual assault by stating: “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized”.

    • The SlutWalk was in response to this

    • Participants protest against explaining or excusing rape by referring to any aspect of a woman’s appearance, and call for an end to rape culture.

    • The movement grew globally

    • There have been two “SlutWalk”s in Singapore

      • December 3, 2011

      • December 15, 2012

      • It was difficult, but it happened at the Speakers’ Corner

      • Social critic and gay rights activist Alex Au commented on the issue: “maybe our senior civil servants can’t get past the word ‘slut’ and have begun to hyperventilate”.

  • “Choose Respect” Rallies in Alaska

    • Alaska has the highest rape rate in America

    • "We have extremely high rates of domestic violence and sexual violence in Alaska," said Katie TePas, a senior policy adviser to the governor. "When victims and survivors see their communities standing up for them, they see a great deal of strength. … And they see help, when they may not have ever sought help before."

    • March 27, 2014

    • There was also one in 2011

By March of 2013, more than 150 Alaska communities participated in Choose Respect marches, rallies, and community events.

U.S. Statistics

  • 95 % of college rapes are never reported to authorities.

  • 60 % of rapes are never reported to authorities.

  • Average number of rape cases reported in the US annually: 89,000 (222,500)

  • In 2010, the study estimates that 1.27 million American women were raped—equivalent to one woman every 29 seconds—and 5.1 million were stalked—equivalent to one woman every 7 seconds.

  • In a national study of college students, 75% of males and 55% of females involved in date rape had been drinking or using other drugs prior to the sexual assault.

  • “Women who wear provocative clothing are sluts who are “asking for it.” But the feminist movement has seriously chipped away at this rape myth.”

  • Every 2 minutes, another American is sexually assaulted

  • 97% of rapists will never spend a day in jail

Famous Opinions

  • “She’s 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn’t remember? It could have been much worse. She’s lucky.”

Serena Williams, world No. 1 women’s singles tennis player, on the Steubenville rape victim

From a Rolling Stone interview: “Do you think it was fair, what they got? They did something stupid, but I don’t know. I’m not blaming the girl, but if you’re a 16-year-old and you’re drunk like that, your parents should teach you: Don’t take drinks from other people. She’s 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn’t remember? It could have been much worse. She’s lucky. Obviously I don’t know, maybe she wasn’t a virgin, but she shouldn’t have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that’s different.”

  • Increased military rapes are a result of the “hookup mentality” in schools.

— Gen. Mark Welsh, Air Force chief of staff, on increased military rapes

At a Senate Armed Services Committee meeting, he noted that 20% of women report they had been sexually assaulted “before they came into the military.”

“So they come in from a society where this occurs. Some of it is the hookup mentality of junior high even and high school students now, which my children can tell you about from watching their friends and being frustrated by it.”

  • “If it’s inevitable, just relax and enjoy it.”

— Clayton Williams, Texas Republican gubernatorial candidate in 1990

Williams compared bad weather to rape: “If it’s inevitable, just relax and enjoy it.”

  • These questions about my choices the night of my assault — as opposed to the choices made by my rapist — were in some ways as painful as the violent act itself. -Zerlina Maxwell

Testimonials (Poems and Books)

  • -“I just want to sleep. A coma would be nice. Or amnesia. Anything, just to get rid of this, these thoughts, whispers in my mind. Did he rape my head, too?” Laurie Halse Anderson, Speak

  • -“You keep the title of ‘president’ even if you served only one term. The same goes for rapists.”  Christy Leigh Stewart

  • -“He pulled my skirt up. I began to worry. Everyone knew he had broken in girls before and I didn’t want it to happen to me. I said, ‘No. Get off, please.’ He pulled me down the alley and pushed me to the ground. As I lay on my back worrying about my new blue coat, he pushed his fingers up between my legs — and rammed himself into me.

I was crying. His lips were pressed against mine but I was motionless, like a small corpse. He grunted and I knew it was over. He got up, I just lay there on the ground, my tights round my ankles. The clock was striking twelve.

As he walked away, he turned and said, ‘I’ve always wanted to do it to you. I like your mouth’.

When I got in, my mum said, ‘Tracey, what’s wrong with you?’ I showed her my coat, the dirt and the stains, and told her ‘I’m not a virgin any more.’

She didn’t call the police or make any fuss. She just washed my coat and everything carried on as normal, as though nothing had happened.

But for me, my childhood was over, I had become conscious of my physicality, aware of my presence and open to the ugly truths of the world. At the age of thirteen, I realised that there was a danger in innocence and beauty, and I could not live with both.

Rape Culture in the U.S.

  • Rape culture: a culture in which sexual violence is the norm and victims are blamed for their own assaults (Time)

  • In January, the White House asserted that we need to combat campus rape by ‘[changing] a culture of passivity and tolerance in this country, which too often allows this type of violence to persist…’ Tolerance for rape? Rape is a horrific crime, and rapists are despised.” (Carolina Kitchens)

  • 70% of ALL reported sexual crimes in the United States involve children (U.S. Department of Justice).

  • For 80% of female victims, first rape occurred before age 25; for 42%, before age 18. (which explains the target audience)

  • New technology provides rapists with more ways to threaten a victim into silence or “consent”

  • It’s considered a culture because

    • refer to statistics below

    • 1 in 5 American women survived rape or attempted rape

    • 1 in 6 American men have been abused before the age of 18

    • “If so many millions of women were getting carjacked or kidnapped, we’d call it a public crisis. That we accept it as normal, even inevitable, is all the evidence I need,” Jaclyn Friedman

    • 97% of rapists don’t spend a day in jail (RAINN Analysis)

    • “What we really despise is theidea of rapists: a terrifying monster lurking in the bushes, waiting to pounce on an innocent girl as she walks by,” Friedman says. “But actual rapists, men who are usually known to (and often loved by) their victims? Men who are sometimes our sports heroes, political leaders, buddies, boyfriends and fathers? Evidence suggests we don’t despise them nearly as much as we should.”  -Zerlina Maxwell

  • #rapecultureis got tweets such as

    • Rape culture is when people say, “she was asking for it.”

    • Rape culture is when we teach women how to not get raped, instead of teaching men not to rape.

    • Rape culture is when the lyrics of Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines’ mirror the words of actual rapists and is still the number one song in the country.

    • Rape culture is when the mainstream media mourns the end of the convicted Steubenville rapists’ football careers and does not mention the young girl who was victimized.

    • Rape culture is when, in 31 states, rapists can legally sue for child custody if the rape results in pregnancy.

    • Rape culture is when college campus advisers tasked with supporting the student body, shame survivors who report their rapes. (Annie Clark, a campus activist, says an administrator at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill told her when she reported her rape, “Well… Rape is like football, if you look back on the game, and you’re the quarterback, Annie… is there anything you would have done differently?”)

    • Rape culture is when colleges are more concerned with getting sued by assailants than in supporting survivors. (Or at Occidental College, where students and administrators who advocated for survivors were terrorized for speaking out against the school’s insufficient reporting procedures.)

  • By denying the obvious we continue to allow rapists to go unpunished and leave survivors silenced.

Causes of Rape

  • Alcohol Abuse: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWCUekDn7cw

    • many do not have the capacity to give consent

  • Drug abuse

  • It isn’t shamed as much as it should be, to many it is still not considered despicable, which is what needs to change

  • Many say that it’s because of the way the victim is dressed, but this is no excuse
